Understanding factors motivating students to pursue radiology: an interview study

Purpose: This cross-sectional study explored factors influencing the choice of diagnostic radiology and examined how perceptions of the field evolve across stages of medical training. By interviewing third- and fourth-year medical students, PGY 2–5 radiology residents, and board-certified radiologists, the study aimed to identify strategies to improve students’ understanding of radiology and reduce barriers to considering it as a career.

Methods/Materials: A qualitative design using semi-structured interviews was employed. Participants included three medical students, three PGY-5 diagnostic radiology residents, and four board-certified radiologists. Reflexive thematic analysis was applied to interview transcripts to identify key themes and subthemes across groups.

Results: Motivating factors for pursuing radiology were consistent across all groups. Participants emphasized the intellectual challenge of the specialty and a strong passion for learning. The interdisciplinary nature of radiology and its role in patient care were highly valued. Interviewees identified earlier exposure, mentorship, and addressing misconceptions as critical to increasing interest in the field. Choosing radiology was described as a process requiring self-reflection and alignment with personal values and goals.

Conclusions: The decision to pursue radiology requires a deep understanding of one’s values and aspirations in medicine. While individual paths vary, common themes suggest that targeted interventions, particularly early exposure and mentorship, can encourage more students to consider radiology. Insights from these interviews can inform curricular strategies aimed at fostering interest and reducing barriers to entry.
